If you have been physically assaulted, you can go to the hospital and receive a forensic exam from a specially trained nurse. These Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) nurses provide expert, trauma-informed care. You are able to get your injuries documented even if you do not want to involve the police, and even if you never chose to use this documentation as evidence. Forensic Nurses are also able to assess and treat any injuries. During the exam, an advocate from NHM can be present for emotional support. This allows the SAFE nurse to focus on your medical needs while the advocate focuses on your emotional needs.

Forensic Exams are sometimes referred to as “rape kits,” but they are not only for sexual assault. Anyone can seek a forensic exam after any kind of assault. We especially encourage anyone who has been strangled to seek medical attention as soon as possible, and to request a forensic exam as soon as you arrive at the emergency room.
